Rating the 2021 F1 Liveries

Now featuring McLaren's Gulf themed livery for the Monaco GP.

We discussed this years liveries and gave them all a rating out of 10. Let us know what you think of them all!

McLaren x Gulf (MCL35M)

Leading up to the return of the Monaco GP, the team announced their one-off Gulf branded livery for the race weekend, and boy does it look good. The retro look of the livery; the matte baby blue of the Gulf branding; paired perfectly with the iconic McLaren orange; tied together with black accents to form the shape and fluency of the car. It is truly a beautiful livery. Only a shame its not here to stay, as the team plan to return to their 2021 livery in Azerbaijan.

Rating: 9.5/10

McLaren (MCL35M)

Why fix something that isn't broken? The 2021 livery from McLaren resembles a very similar look to its predecessor, with a few small changes here and there. First off, the sponsorship logos that came with Carlos Sainz have obviously been removed, and the nice addition of the rainbow has been incorporated into the side panels of the car. This comes after F1 decided to remove the rainbow logo from the #WeRaceAsOne campaign.

All in all a well balanced colour scheme that stands out from the crowd with its iconic papaya orange.

Rating: 7/10

AlphaTauri (AT02)

This livery, again has many similar features to its debut livery in 2020, retaining the same colour scheme and keeping the sponsor logos to a minimum. The large AlphaTauri logo has been moved up to the top with a nice pinstripe shaping the length of the car. The bright red accent from the Honda Hybrid logo is a welcome pop of colour, although we would agree that it would be nice to bring that colour to the rear wing too. The white rims are a unique addition that help the flow of the colours across the car.

Our only setbacks are that the white wave takes up too much of the rear half of the car, taking away from the sleek sharp look that the AT01 had last year.

Rating: 7/10

Alfa Romeo (C41)

A piece of art. Taking the best parts of their previous livery and only improving them this year, the C41 is a thing of beauty. The glossy red, matched with the pearl white, and with the subtle accent of green from the clover; a brilliant balance of colours. The fin along the top of the car being made black is also a welcome addition as it almost hides it when put up against a dark background, only adding to the elegant sheen the car already has. The two sides are also asymmetric, with the Alfa Romeo logo not being flipped to compensate, this has been done in such a way that doesnt detract from the overall livery. Our only drawback is the blandness of the front half of the car - there's just too much white.

Overall though, a well balanced livery, with very minor faults from our perspective.

Rating: 9/10

Red Bull (RB16B)

As many would have guessed, the Red Bull team have stuck to what they know and kept what is essentially the exact same livery as the previous year. And we have to say, although it wasn't much to look forward to in terms of the unknown, it does still look really good. The bright Red Bull colours pop, and the matte navy as the base colour sets it up to be a mean looking machine hoping to bring the fight to the championship against Mercedes this year.

Rating: 8.5/10

Mercedes (W12)

We're not sure what to think of this one. We were hoping the teasers of the sticker bomb were fake, but unfortunately the team decided plastering the back third of the car with "AMG" was a smart idea. This is an example of why trying to fixing something that wasn't broken to begin with is a bad idea. The front half of the car is really nice, and the cherry red from the Ineos around the air intake is a healthy4 splash of colour. We also are a fan of the cyan blue trim along the bottom and around the rims. The gradient from the black livery back to their historical silver arrows is also a welcome addition, but those AMG logo's are just not the one.

Despite how good looking the front 2 thirds of the car look, the AMG stickers are so much of an eye sore, it's brought the overall rating down quite significantly.

Rating: 6.5/10

Alpine (A521)

Almost perfection. This car has everything going for it. The subtle French flags disguised around the car; the semi-gloss blue that shines bright under the sun; the striking bold red that ties it all together. It looks amazing. When we first saw the blacked out winter livery, we knew they had the right people on the job for this one. Our only issues with it are the green from the Castrol Edge sponsor not contrasting well with the blue - if it were whited out, and maybe shrunk down a little, it would work a lot better. Also the red behind the Mapfre is almost too striking, and takes away from the streamlined trim of black that shapes the bottom half of the car.

If those two colour changes were made, this would easily be a top rated livery, but those slight eyesores just hold it back from reaching the top.

Rating: 9.5/10

Aston Martin (AMR21)

Brandishing the new Aston Martin logo, the watermelon colour scheme didn't turn out as bad as we had thought it might. The one livery that everyone was waiting for did not dissapoint. Although the late sponsorship with BWT likely took away the bright lime green that has become rather iconic with Aston Martin's brand, in place of the pink, the design team have done a brilliant job at tying it all together to create a modern classic of a livery. The slight hue difference from the iconic British Racing Green, in a nod to the original DBR1 green, works well with the accent of pink from the BWT branding. One fault that does stand out for us is the yellow/orange from the JCB logo. If those were whited out, we feel it would have only added to the clean design that they have gone for.

Although it looks really good, there is a lot that could be done to make it even better. We hope the evolution of the Aston Martin livery only goes up from here!

Rating: 8.5/10

Haas (VF-21)

This livery does look good, and the debut F1 livery for graphics designer Brandon Seaber, he had his work cut out for him. With the recent controversy the team have themselves mixed up in, this livery was sure to only fuel the fire. But all politics aside, this livery is a fresh new look for the team, stepping away from the darker grey they had before and instead incorporating brighter colours. The livery quite clearly resembles a national flag, and although we would have preferred a more subtle approach, the striking livery is captivating to look it.

Rating: 7.5/10

Williams (FW43B)

The front half of this car is great! In homage to their classic, unforgettable, camel livery on the FW14 from the 90s, the yellow/orange pops of colour accentuate the divide between their classic livery and their new one. That being said, the modern rear half of the car isn't as memorable or bold as we would have liked it. If the yellow had flowed right the way across the length of the car, it would have helped take away from the blank space at the rear (that presumably would be filled with sponsors if they had many).

All things considered, its a striking new livery for the them compared to last year, and as a team built on the premise of their history in the sport, the recognition of their old colours is a welcome addition to the 2021 grid.

Rating: 6.5/10

Ferrari (SF21)

As expected, the Ferrari retained it's iconic red livery. Only this time they added a welcome gradient at the rear of the car that transitions to their retro burgundy red. That bright green eye sore is a stand out feature that some people either love or hate. Our general consensus is that it is an unfortunate feature that takes away from the beauty that is beneath it. Also the Mission Winnow logo on the rear wing in black does not go well against the dark burgundy background. If it weren't for the bright green, this would have been a highly rated livery, however it seems Ferrari have followed the path of similar liveries adding one small, but bold, mistake costing them the overall look of the car.

Rating: 6/10
