Former Mahindra Formula E team boss, Dilbagh Gill, and former Formula 1 driver, Nick Heidfeld, have joined forces to create this new electric feeder motorsport series.
Previously announced under the name 'ACE Championship', this rebrand comes with the announcement of its plans to launch in late 2024, and run as a support series on the same tracks and race weekends as existing motorsport series'.
Formula G aims to fill the gap between karting and Formula E, acting as a feeder series into the well renowned all-electric series that enters is 10th Season in 2024. It is also possible that the series will run on the same weekends as Formula E in a few years time as an offical support series.
Why Formula G?
The 'G' stands for multiple meanings:
Formula Green
Formula Groundbreaking
Formula Good
Formula Growth
Formula Global
The Car
The cars used in the series will be using a 'dual-power' concept that will allow both a junior category & senior category of racing to compete under Formula G using the same cars on different power levels; A higher-power mode in the F-G1 Championship for more experienced drivers, and a lower-power mode in the F-G2 series.
This dual power concept will allow for a multi-stage feeder series at a significantly lower cost, as only 20 cars will have to be used to fullfill a 40 driver lineup across the two categories.
The current plan is for a 10 team, 20 car lineup with 40 drivers (20 F-G1 drivers, and 20 F-G2 drivers).
In their original plans, they had hoped to make use of the Gen2 Formula E cars, in an attempt to save even more costs, but it became apparant that the intellectual property rights being tied to FE and the teams would cause far more issues, and so they will develop their own cars known as the FG-ETwin.
"We hope to bring down the costs a lot and make it easier for drivers to enter [the sport]" - Nick Heidfeld, Co-Founder of Formula G
The RACE Calendar
The series has opted to initially aim towards four independent regional based championships (with a fifth in 2026), in a similar fashion to how Formula 4 has their own regional championships. The aim is to host a championship in North America, Latin America, Europe & Africa, and Southwest Asia, with an East Asian Championship also planned for 2026.
The move towards regionally independent championships allows even more opportunities for more drivers to take part and showcase their ability in single-seater racing.
"Formula G will attract more diversity in team owners, drivers, mechanics, and engineers" - Dilbagh Gill, CEO & Co-Founder of Formula G
